Global ranking of green passport improves its best for Pakistan

SLAMABAD:
As a result of a significant rise in the Pakistani passport's global ranking, Pakistani citizens are now able to travel to 32 countries without requiring a visa or with access to visa-on-arrival.

The most recent data from the international ranking platform Henley & Partners show that Pakistan's passport is now ranked 100th worldwide, up from 113th in 2021. The improvement is seen as a reflection of Pakistan's enhanced diplomatic outreach and evolving international relations.

The development comes just a few days after an agreement was signed between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) allowing travelers with diplomatic and official passports from both countries to travel without needing a visa. For eligible travelers, the bilateral arrangement eliminates the need for a pre-travel visa, strengthening diplomatic ties between Islamabad and Abu Dhabi. In a post on X, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that he signed an agreement with his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan on "mutual visa exemption for the holders of diplomatic and official passports of our two countries".

He added, "This significant step reflects our shared resolve to deepen institutional collaboration across all levels and further strengthen our fraternal ties." During the 12th session of the Pakistan-UAE Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), both nations agreed to waive visa requirements for each other. Officials say the move will ease high-level official engagements and reflect growing trust and cooperation between the two nations.

LAHORE – The Henley Passport Index 2025 has shown a significant improvement in the global ranking of the Pakistani passport, offering citizens greater travel convenience worldwide.

Pakistan has jumped 13 spots to secure the 100th position in this year’s rankings.  The improved position now allows Pakistani citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 32 countries, easing global travel and boosting international mobility.

The Director General of Passports congratulated the nation on the improvement, stating that new security features introduced in the Pakistani passport have contributed to this progress.  He added that modern technology and efficiency have enhanced the passport issuance system.

Furthermore, the DG announced that e-passport holders would soon benefit from e-gate services at all major airports, enabling faster immigration processing and added convenience for international travelers.

In contrast, Singapore topped the 2025 list with the world’s most powerful passport, followed by Japan and South Korea.  European nations like Germany, France, and Italy also ranked among the top three, sharing the third spot.

China came in at number 64, Turkey came in at number 49, and India came in at number 82. Notably, Pakistan’s passport was among the lowest-ranked globally just last year.  The country's diplomatic engagement and international image have improved as a result of this promotion.
