As Australia gears up for its Champions Trophy opener against England on Saturday, captain Steve Smith remains confident that his team’s emerging talents will rise to the occasion despite missing key stars.

The defending ODI world champions have been hit hard by several high-profile absences, including fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, who are sidelined due to injury, and Mitchell Starc, who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

In addition, Mitchell Marsh is unavailable due to injury, and Marcus Stoinis’ sudden retirement from one-day internationals has left Australia looking depleted.  Second-tier pace bowlers Ben Dwarshuis, Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, and Sean Abbott are ready to take on the challenge with more than 40 ODIs between them. Smith stated to reporters, "It is clear we are missing our gun fast bowlers, but we are not worried about that." We are contemplating our present situation and the opportunity presented by those individuals. It will be a great experience for us to see them put under pressure against high-quality opponents, and it will be an exciting time for us." "I think they have been placed under pressure, under many different scenarios, in T20 cricket or different T20 franchises around the world," Smith continued. Australia has won six ODI World Cups, two Champions Trophy trophies, and one T20 World Cup. It has been a dominant force in ICC tournaments. Despite this, Smith acknowledged that their Champions Trophy performance in recent years has been subpar. Smith stated, "The pressure of big tournaments gets the best out of us as a team." However, we have not performed as well in the Champions Trophy over the past ten or so years. Our message to the group is, "It's basically a quarterfinal to start things off, and hopefully that can bring out the best in our players."

Australia and England both enter the tournament having lost series to Sri Lanka and India, with Australia losing by a score of 2-0 in one-day internationals in Sri Lanka and England losing by a score of 3-0 in India. “We both didn’t play as well as we would have liked in the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean a great deal coming into tomorrow,” said Smith.  "I think it's a new tournament and a new beginning. I'm looking forward to it tomorrow; it should be a good game between two good teams." England’s Jos Buttler, in his pre-match comments, acknowledged the challenge of facing Australia, even with their depleted pace attack.

He stated, "Obviously there will be a miss for their team because they have been a real pillar of success for Australia for a long period of time." But they also have some great players who can fill those roles, and Australia has always done well in ICC tournaments. We anticipate a very difficult challenge. Buttler stated, "England and Australia, there’s always a great rivalry and a competitive match," despite the fact that Australia was without their key pace bowlers. We are looking forward to it because, of course, each game in the Champions Trophy format is a huge one. In terms of fitness, Buttler expressed confidence in the availability and fitness of fast bowler Jofra Archer, stating, "He’s been fit and firing now for... 18 months or so since being out of the game for a while." Therefore, he is extremely excited to put on a performance." According to Buttler, "I think everywhere you go around the world, everywhere has its own nuances and different conditions," he also expressed confidence in his team's Pakistani experience. We've got a lot of guys who have played in Pakistan before, so we're going to share those experiences." Australia is counting on its new talent to deliver when it matters most, while England hopes to capitalize on its experiences and competitive spirit as the tournament progresses. As the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals, the Champions Trophy Group B matchup between the two archrivals will be crucial for both sides.
